Sedona has a perfect outdoor adventure, fascinating history, and beautiful landscapes. This is one of our favorite things about the area. These are all scattered throughout the region, so it is important to know how the area is laid out to plan the best itinerary possible and get the most from your time in Sedona.
Uptown Sedona
Uptown Sedona is located north of Highway 89A/179. Also known as the Y. This area of town has a lot more to offer, including several galleries and the Sedona Heritage Museum.
It’s centrally located so you can reach everything in minutes.
West Sedona
Highway 89A is a bit more rural than the other roads, but you still have all the amenities, including restaurants and hotels. You can drive from West Sedona to Cottonwood while close to Devil’s Bridge.
The Surrounding Cities
Sedona’s Village of Oak Creek offers a cheaper alternative. It has several mid-range hotels and the Sedona golf resort. Cottonwood is located further west along the Verde Valley. It will take you another hour to reach Sedona. However, you’ll be within easy driving distance of many great wineries on the Verde Valley Wine Trail.
Oak Creek Canyon
Although the Grand Canyon is the most well-known gorge in Arizona’s state, Sedona’s Oak Creek Canyon will surprise you. Here you will find the most spectacular views of the town. The red rocks rise from the valley’s green-yellow, creating bright beacons.
It is also a drive to remember between Sedona Canyon and Oak Creek Canyon. The scenic route follows State Route 89A to Oak Creek Vista. This route is also recommended for those driving from Flagstaff to Sedona.
Oak Creek Canyon has many exciting activities. You’ll find it in the canyon. You can also go down to the river, fish for trout, or camp under the stars.
Stop by Oak Creek Vineyards on your way to Sedona. This spot is also on the Verde Valley Wine Trail (see below). You’ll enjoy stunning views of the vineyard from your patio and tranquility in red rock country.
The Sedona Trolley
A trip on the Sedona Trolley is a great way to start your visit to Sedona. To keep things simple, the trolley offers Tour A and Tour B tours.
Tour A takes visitors to Sedona to the south. Along the way, you’ll pass the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village and the Chapel of the Holy Cross.
Tour B takes you to West Sedona and Fay Canyon and provides expert narration. You’ll see many famous sights along the way, such as Thunder Mountain or Chimney Rock. A 15-minute photo stop will be made within Fay Canyon’s red rock walls.
